What this state means

Selected plans, with the qualification kept attached.

Public preview and subject to change. Available in Visual Studio Code, the GitHub Copilot app, and Copilot CLI. Not available on Copilot Free or Copilot Student. Organization and enterprise owners can disable the image-generation model. Billed in image tokens that count toward AI credits.

Capability definition

Creates or materially edits raster or vector visual assets from instructions.

Scope boundary

Diagrams rendered from code and image search results do not count as native image generation.

Researcher note

Path A pairs the GitHub Docs image-generation page with the 2026-10-28 GitHub Changelog. Both say Copilot can generate and edit images. Both name Pro, Pro+ (recorded as Pro Plus), Business, and Enterprise. Docs also list Copilot Max under who can use this feature; the changelog does not, and this product's tracked plans have no Max tier, so Max stays out. Docs explicitly exclude Free and Student.
