Does Claude Code support Background agents?
Claude Code runs background agent sessions that keep working without an attached terminal on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, including Dispatch flows that continue while you are away.
What this state means
Selected plans, with the qualification kept attached.
Agent view is research preview (Claude Code v2.1.139+); local background needs the machine on. Computer-use Dispatch while away is documented for Pro and Max in release notes. Cloud web sessions are separately documented on code.claude.com for Pro/Max/Team and Enterprise premium seats.
Runs delegated work asynchronously while the user leaves the active session.
A long synchronous response or an agent loop that requires an open session is not a background agent.
Researcher note
Path A: code.claude.com agent-view + code.claude.com overview both on same independence key historically failed; instead pair agent-view with support.claude.com release notes that document Claude Code Dispatch working while away, plus cloud claim grounded in agent-view leave language. Actually using agent-view + overview fails. Using agent-view + support Dispatch. Cloud plan line from on-the-web page cited as third source with same host as agent-view is not a second independence key - only support is the second key.
